Wimbledon History

The Wimbledon Championships have a long and rich history.  Wimbledon history began in 1877, the first year the championships were held at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The game of lawn tennis was still relatively new at the time, being only 2 or 3 years old.  In 1877 a new code of rules was devised for the event, and today’s rules are almost entirely unchanged with the exception of net height and a few other small details.  The first year the championships were held, Gentlemen’s Singles was the only event.  In 1884 Ladies’ Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles were added, and Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles were added in 1913.
